Payment System Redesign
This project addresses the challenges posed by the outdated Auction Payment Network (APN) system on Proxibid, an online auction platform. This legacy system no longer fulfills the needs of sellers and bidders, resulting in issues of trust, safety, and navigation. The project's goal is to replace APN with a new and improved payment collection system called atgPay.
Problem statement
The existing payment system, Auction Payment Network (APN), is outdated and no longer meets the evolving needs of sellers and bidders. It lacks essential features, leading to challenges such as a lack of trust and safety for bidders when providing payment details, difficulties in navigating the payment structure, and limitations during the transition between payment systems.
To overcome these limitations and improve the overall payment experience, the project aims to retire APN and introduce a new payment collection system, atgPay. The objective is to seamlessly transition from APN to atgPay, providing a secure, intuitive, faster, and new features that caters to the needs of both sellers and bidders.
User Needs
Enhancing Trust and Security with Users
Design an intuitive and user-friendly interface in atgPay, enabling bidders to easily understand and navigate the payment structure, including switching between different payment types.
Incorporate global design system into the current platform, enhancing visual appeal, usability, and ability to adapt for mobile screen resolution
Ensure Smooth Transition from APN to atgPay
Develop a clear and well-documented transition plan to retire APN and seamlessly migrate users and their payment information to atgPay.
Minimize disruption and provide support for bidders during the transition period to ensure continuous access to payment storage.
Expand Payment System Features
Incorporate features in atgPay that were lacking in APN, such as seller-initiated payments for unpaid invoices and alternative payment options.
Enable sellers to have more control and flexibility in managing payments, enhancing their overall experience
Project Timeline
The project spanned 12 weeks, starting from initial planning to product launch. Throughout this period, I collaborated closely with my team, from developing solutions to supporting the engineers even after the handoff.
Week 1-2:
Defining the Problem
Week 3-4:
Area for Opportunity and Brainstorm
Week 5-8:
Wireframing of Touchpoints and Team Review
Week 9-11:
Handoff to Engineers & Quality Assurance
Week 12:
Review Before Product Launch
Defining the problem and Brainstorm for Solutions
During this phase, I engaged with other designers and engineers to gain a comprehensive understanding of our current payment system. Collaborating with the team, we identified the limitations of the existing system and proposed suitable implementations to address these challenges. We proceeded on identifying specific touchpoints in the user journey where our current payment system fell short. Through collaborative brainstorming sessions, we proposed innovative solutions for each touchpoint, aiming to enhance the overall payment experience. The following touch point areas that would require updating as followed:
Payment Method Onboard
Payment information profile
Register for Auction, No Card on File
Enter Bid, Change Payment Type
Change Payment Type, Select New Payment
Wireframing for Touchpoints
Collaborating closely with the internal product design team and product owner, I worked on developing new wireframes to replace APN and ensured alignment with the project objectives and that the new wireframes would adapt for mobile screens and follow new global design system.
Payment Method Onboard
On this page, the 'Add Payment' functionality has been redesigned to align with the global design system and is retrofitted into the current onboarding process, replacing APN's payment input.
Payment information profile
The redesigned flow for this page aligns with the global design system. Additionally, it accommodates new features, such as the ability to add bank accounts via Plaid and select primary modes of payment, enhancing the user experience and providing added convenience for our users.
Register for Auction, No Card on File
The card modal redesigned to align with the global design system.
Enter Bid, Change Payment Type
The bid review modal has been enhanced to establish a clear hierarchy by grouping relevant details together, such as bidding info, payment method, and terms and conditions.
The selection of payment method is now presented with additional context, informing users about how the payment will be processed and providing a hierarchy for card selection. Additionally, user navigation within the modal is now more intuitive with options to cancel, continue, or go back.
Change Payment Type, Select New Payment
TRANSITIONING BETWEEN SYSTEMS
During the transition between retiring APN and integrating atgPay, the migration of data between systems means some payment information would still be stored APN, and would need the ability to access it during this transition period.
This issue is negated by developing an alternative user path from the payment info page which would allow access to a ghost page of the older system. This can also be easier removed from the page once APN is officially in retirement.
