UI/UX

 Travellite

I worked on this capstone project as part of my Masters of Professional Studies in Communication Design Program at The New School. The timeline was 15 weeks, which I spent the first 5 performing user research, the next 5 on prototyping and user testing on low fidelity and mid fidelity systems, and the last 5 weeks on the high fidelity product and the branding.

Project Description

The app compiles all COVID related documents into a single digital pass that would presented at country’s point of entry, and keeps travellers updated with the current protocols of their destination

Problem Statement

My project focuses on addressing international travel during the pandemic, and how it has affected people’s viewpoint on taking trips abroad. Travellers feel hesitant to plan trips abroad due to the constant changing of countries guidelines and protocols.

User Research

I looked for interviewees that are between the ages of 20 to 30, and who have made any trips internationally after March of 2020. The goal of my interviews were to better understand routines and preparations for travel, along with an understanding of the pandemic and how that has shaped their experiences in travelling since.

USER Research Insights

I condensed the user interviews I collected into key themes as following:

  • Efficiency of travel: maximising the trip itinerary to ensure value for money

  • Flexibility in travel itinerary: expectations of any last minute changes that may occur

  • Purposeful travel: only taking trips to visit friends or family instead of for leisure

  • Travel Logistics: finding a test site in a foreign country or quarantine

  • Paperwork and Documentation: ensuring that the traveller has all the right documents on hand before departure

Key Takeaway

Travellers felt frustrated trying to keep up with the changing protocols, and the constant stress of forgetting part of whole of their documents a factor in deciding on travelling in general.

How Might We..

How might we help travellers ensure their documents meet the current requirements according to changing protocols in one place?

Lofi Prototypes

I created a total of 6 prototypes, in which elements of 3 were combined to create the mid fi prototype based on the responses from user testing in regards to the lofi prototypes.

Prototype 1: Query

By filling out the query in the app, it can quickly pull up a checklist of what travel documents they currently need to produce at the point of arrival.

Prototype 2: TESTFINDER

Travellers would be able to find a reliable test site anywhere they travel to, and acts as a platform to suggest locations for testing and provide ranking based on proximity and popularity.

Prototype 3: QR COde

Travellers would upload a series of documents needed before travel, once approved a  QR code would be generated to be presented without the need for other documents.

Midfi prototype

In this prototype, priority in focus area centres around document compilation of COVID related paperwork. The following features were incorporated from the lofis in mind to streamline the collection of this paperwork

  • A generated QR code containing all pandemic travel documents.

  • Digital wallet tab, which allows easy access to the passes on current trips

  • The option for group travel such as families with elderly/young children.

MiDFI FINDINGS

Unclear iconography

Most users did not fully understand the “wallet” or its icon

Confusing Language

Users felt lost when navigating the app due to the unclear directive language

Not accommodating for shifting variables

How will the system accommodate roundtrips of different locations?

Branding

Brand Logo

The concept of the logo aims to capture the high energy and motion of a jetsetting plane as it journeys from one destination to the next. The logo reflects the brand goal of enticing travellers to regain confidence in travelling once without having to worry about the logistics of pandemic travel.

brand Colours

Inspired by the airline travel advertising of the 50’s and 60’s, the colours selected for the brand harks back to the golden age of air travel; marking a simpler time to board and jet set.

Brand Type

The brand type uses General Sans, which reflects the minimal branding system of evoking a brand feel of streamlined, reliable, and trustworthy product
